How Safe are Our Elders?

The subject of elder abuse is one that many of us don't like to address. But, with so many older adults living with family, in nursing homes, or other care facilities, there are many questions we need to ask to identify if an older person is experiencing physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, and even financial abuse. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), it is very difficult to know exactly how many victims of elder abuse there are each year. The best estimates range from 1 million to 2 million per year, but reporting rates are low. This article provides some of the ways abuse is occurring and offers prevention strategies that can help us confront this problem.

According to Census projections, the number of boomers reaching 65 will increase exponentially from 39 million today to 69 million in 2030, raising the question, among others, of how long people should be allowed to drive. Individual states are considering programs that will allow older adults to keep driving as long as possible without endangering themselves or others. AARP and other advocates call age-based testing discriminatory and ineffective and want to see ability rather than age used as the criterion. As we know, taking driving away from an active adult is never easy...and, what happens when the car keys are yours?


Congress On Board to Fight Elder Abuse

Ending abuse against the elderly has become a popular cause for federal legislators. Recognizing the need for action, advocates have catapaulted the Elder Justice Act into the discussion of healthcare reform.  Both the House and Senate are proposing bills for a nationwide program of background checks for people who care for the elderly and creating oversight within the Department of Health and Human Services for coordinating state and federal anti-abuse efforts.
