At a recent celebration in Palo Alto, ten Encore Fellowship graduates, all over 50 years old, marked their "graduation" from a pilot program for boomers. This program places high paying private sector executives in stipended positions in nonprofit organizations working in the fields of education and the environment. The model is slated to expand to all 50 states under federal legislation enacted last spring to take advantage of the Encore Generation's interest in using their skills for social impact. This story is about Miss Francis, a 77-year-old Chester, PA great-grandmother who has been a community activist and caregiver for more than 100 children (many in foster care) who is still cooking part-time at a home for the disabled... and working to help young mothers be better parents. While she is extraordinary, she's not unusual..."there's a Miss Francis in every urban neighborhood... If she weren't around, the community would fall apart." A tribute and a call to action. As women (and an increasing number of men!) reach their late fifties, many are encouraged to check their bone health to see if there is any sign of osteoporosis (loss of bone density). While exercising may sound like a bad idea if you have this condition, the opposite is true. Starting an exercise program will increase your muscle strength, improve your balance and help you avoid falls — and it may keep your bones from getting weaker. Journey’s Way, Touching Lives Over 55, located at 403 Rector St., Philadelphia, is currently looking for volunteers 55 and older to lead discussion groups on health and wellness, life stories and aging issues. Participants must enjoy people, be able to listen and have transportation to and from meetings. Discussion groups meet in senior community centers citywide. The Center for Obesity Research and Education (CORE), on Temple's Health Science Campus is seeking subjects to participate in a weight loss study. Participants must be overweight, between the ages of 21 and 65, eat in response to emotions, non-smokers, free of diabetes and be available for 20 weekly group meetings and one study-related visit, all on campus.
