President Obama has made national service a priority...and people 50+ have heeded the call. More than twice the number of older volunteers have signed up this year for the Peace Corps. They bring their wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and eagerness to give back ... along with their knapsacks! Read about some recent "enlistees."

How Old is Old?

When the Pew Research Center asked people under 30 when "old age" begins, the average answer was 60. But when the Center asked people over 65, the average answer was 75. "Old age is always a bit older than you are," said Jeffrey Love, research director at AARP. The New York Times article on the survey found that the younger set envisions getting older as more challenging than what older adults report.

Remaining at Home...Safely

Mayor's Tax and Economic Policy Meeting

The Mayor's Task Force on Tax Policy & Economic Competitiveness welcomes public input as it develops recommendations to improve Philadelphia's future. The meeting will solicit feedback on its preliminary proposals about Philadelphia's tax structure and real estate development environment. Thursday, August 13, 4-6:30 pm, City Hall Room 400. Discussion on Community Programs for All

ASL’s provide homework help, technology support, and mentoring for the Free Library’s LEAP after-school program that operates in all 53 branches of the library. Helping Children Deal with Loss

The Center for Loss and Bereavement, located in Skippack, PA, provides counseling services to individuals, couples and families dealing with loss. Volunteers are needed in their children's program, Nello's Corner, to support 4-17 year olds who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling.
