If you are a boomer, you probably pride yourself on being youthful, diet-conscious, and certainly different from your parents. But, when it comes to aging and weight gain, their generation has the edge on staying slimmer and trimmer. Government figures show that Americans in their 60s today are about 10 pounds heavier than their counterparts of just a decade ago. The findings from a National Institute on Aging study that tracked 2,300 people for more than 50 years found that calm and active people lived longer than their counterparts. This is probably not surprising. The personality traits that were linked to longevity include emotional stability, organization, discipline, conscientiousness and resourcefulness. Sun City, the retirement community in Arizona that redefined retirement, is celebrating its 50th birthday. The original development and its newer offshoots are still an attractive option for people 50+, boasting lots of amenities and affordable housing. The crowd has changed over the years: more than half still work, many are single, and Internet cafes are meeting spots of choice. As this article points out, life after 60 is no longer the endpoint, but rather the beginning of a new life phase.

Women who are 50+ vary in many ways, but most would agree that dealing with finances and thinking about the future are topics that take top priority. The Philadelphia Chapter of The Transition Network is offering a workshop that will help boomer women evaluate their current financial situation and strategize about ways to be financially sound as they age. The workshop, to be held on January 27th, 6:30 p.m. at the Bala Cynwyd Library, 131 Old Lancaster Road, Bala Cynwyd, PA, is free. Space is limited. To register, click here.
The National Constitution Center and the University of Pennsylvania Law School welcome Lee Epstein, Barry Friedman and Jeffrey Rosen to talk about the Supreme Court’s relationship to American popular opinion. Guests will discuss Friedman’s book, The Will of the People, and his belief that the court and voters ultimately come into line with one another. Have We Got an Opportunity for You!
Two part-time volunteer positions are available at the Family Service Association of Bucks County: a driver and an administrative assistant. The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time Census Takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. Census takers work in their own neighborhoods and help determine the community's representation in government and how federal funds are spent on roads, parks, housing, schools, and public safety. The Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a nonprofit serving people with mental health challenges, is recruiting an Older Adult Program Manager. The successful candidate will have a master's degree and understand behavioral health systems advocacy, coalition-building, and community organizing and outreach. Responsibile for the supervision of older adult advocates and the development of educational and training materials. Travel involved. Please e-mail resume and letter of interest.
For more that 20 years, the nationally-recognized Time Out Respite Program, sponsored by Temple's Intergenerational Center, has been mobilizing and training college students to offer caregivers a break from caring for a frail, elderly family member. If you would like a Time Out student to help provide in-home assistance, companionship, and recreational, social, and physical activities for your family member/friend, please call (215) 204-1328. The fee is $8/hour.
