Social Security Stimulus Payment on the Way

For those needing some good news...the recently signed economic stimulus legislation, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, provides for a one-time payment of $250 to the more than 55 million people who presently get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security benefits. The checks should be received by late May 2009. There is no action required by recipients.

Special Emergency Rooms for Older Adults

According to a recent federal government survey, people 75 and older are second only to infants in using hospital emergency departments. While separate children's emergency rooms have been on the rise, the 65 plus crowd is just beginning to get their own facilities. In addition to soothing colors, walls between examining rooms, and slip-free surfaces, older patients are seen by doctors and nurses trained in geriatrics. To read more, click here.

Children as Caregivers ... A Troubling Trend?

An eleven-year old having the responsibility for giving her diabetic mom her daily pills and pricking her finger for blood tests... should she be the go-to? Children acting as caretakers is a growing trend -- some children develop maturity and self-esteem; others grow anxious, angry, sacrifice social and extracurricular activities and miss — or quit — school. Programs have been formed to give children support. Unfortunately, not all children talk about this part of their lives. Read this recent New York Times article...

"Bring a Friend to Breakfast"

The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) will sponsor a free continental breakfast and information session for those interested in becoming Volunteer Ombudsmen. Ombudsmen visit and advocate for residents in long-term care facilities. There will be a presentation about the program and a panel discussion with volunteers who will share their experiences. The meeting will be held on March 10, from 9:30 to 11:30 am at PCA, 642 N. Broad Street. To register, call Roszine Stephenson at (215) 765-9000, ext. 3102.

Aye Matey! Help Needed at Maritime Museum

Volunteer at Philadelphia's premier maritime history museum and one of city's top tourist destinations! Docents are needed at Independence Seaport Museum to lead educational tours through the Seaport's two floors of exhibit galleries and at two National Historic Landmark ships. Sign Up to Be a Philly Green Volunteer

A few buds are peeking up in green spaces and the flower show has arrived! It's time to sign up to be a Philadelphia Green Volunteer. Through this Philadelphia Horticultural Society program, volunteers help plant, prune, weed, and water flowers and plants in a variety of locations throughout the city, including Logan Square, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Eastern State Penitentiary. There is a paid, full-time opening for a Senior Audit Coordinator to join its Finance Department; the responsibilities include coordinating the audit for the annual campaign, managing the collection efforts, and the resolution of credit balances. In celebration of twenty-five years of art education, mural-making and working in communities, the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program invites the public to participate in its first city-wide mural project. Facilitated community forums will encourage feedback, which will in turn direct and inspire two teams of artists to create two mural designs. These designs will be put to a city-wide vote and the winning mural will become the canvas for a series of community paint days. Click here for more information.

Defiance: The Bielski Partisans

Nechama Tec is a Holocaust survivor, a professor, and the author of a memoir of growing up during the Nazi occupation of Poland. The acclaimed film, Defiance, tells her story of the Bielski brothers, three farmers in Nazi-occupied Byelorussia (now Belarus), who took to the forests in 1941 as partisans after the slaughter of their parents and ended up saving more than 1,000 fellow Jews from death in the extermination camps. Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer film critic will moderate. FREE. No tickets required.

Are You Enrolled for Medicare Part B?

If you didn’t sign up for Medicare Part B when you first became eligible, you may be able to sign up during the General Enrollment Period. This period runs from January 1 through March 31 of each year. During this time, you can sign up for Medicare Part B at your local Social Security office. If you get benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), call your local RRB office or 1-877-772-5772. Your Medicare Part B coverage will start on July 1 of the year you sign up.
