Make Sure Your Heirs Know Your Wishes

Nobody likes to talk about dying and some feel that planning for the inevitable only speeds the process. But, financial advisors urge anyone who wants to ease the burden on their heirs to prepare financial documents in advance and make sure that their wishes are in writing and easy to find. This New York Times article breaks down the areas that need to considered into “high priorities and someday-maybes.” This seems as realistic a strategy as any to force yourself to begin the process.

Time to Hit the Trail

With the delightful spring weather enticing us outdoors, it's time to lace up the walking shoes and join Lois Brooks on Sunday, April 25th, from 1:15 -2:30 p.m. for a comfortably paced walk on Tyler Arboretum's woodland trails and meadows. Those looking for more challenging terrain can follow the Orange and White Trails that feature moderate-to-steep hiking. Tyler is located in Media, PA. Walks are free with admission. Walk for Peace and Reconciliation

Philadelphia's Seventh Annual "Interfaith Walk for Peace and Reconciliation" will take place on Sunday, April 25th, 2010 at 2 p.m. This "Walking Dialogue" among Jews, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Baha'i, Hindus and others will be stopping at churches and other sites in West Philadelphia with prayer, song, and conversation at each venue. Anna Quindlen Discusses Her Latest Novel

The number one New York Times bestselling author, Anna Quindlen, has made her mark writing about families, relating domestic concerns to wider social issues. Quindlen's latest book, Every Last One, portrays a loving mother, her depressed son, and the explosive, violent consequences of what seem like inconsequential actions. Submit Your "Recipe" for Strength

May is Older Americans Month--a time to be recognized for our many accomplishments and skills! The Administration of Aging (AoA) is asking for entries for their "My Recipe for Strength" contest, including videos, photographs, and poetry/prose that highlight the theme of "Age Strong, Live Long." Your "ingredients" might be an exercise routine, civic engagement through community activities, or the role of friendship. Winners will be posted on the AoA website and will receive a certificate of recognition. Entries are due by April 30th. To learn more or to enter, click here.

The Committee of Seventy fights for clean and effective government, fair elections and a better informed citizenry in Philadelphia and the region. In preparation for the May 18th elections, the Committee is looking for volunteers for its Voter Protection Program. People are needed to visit polls and provide support for voters and election officers. It's a great (nonpartisan) way to be right in the thick of the action. Offering the "Gift of Presence"

Compassionate…emotionally mature…flexible…a good listener. Holy Redeemer Hospice is seeking volunteers with these qualities to provide comfort and companionship to hospice patients and their families in Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. Volunteers visit patients during the day in homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and at the hospice's in-patient unit and provide the "gift of presence."
