HISTORY: Founded in 2002 by the Intergenerational Center at Temple University and several other Philadelphia institutions, Coming of Age began local programming in 2004, national programming in 2007, and replication in other communities in 2009.
REPLICATION COMMUNITIES: Austin Metro, Central Pennsylvania, Delaware State, Kansas City Metro, and San Francisco Bay Area. Coming of Age is pleased to announce the establishment of Coming of Age in New York City as of July 1, 2011.
Coming of Age: NYC is the latest local establishment of this exciting national initiative designed to help individuals 50+ connect and contribute to their communities. One of its goals is to build the capacity of organizations in utilizing the skills, passions, and interests of people 50+ to further their mission. Ultimately, it strives to strengthen New York City communities by promoting lifelong civic engagement and to encourage people 50+ to realize their own potential to live satisfying, rich lives.
Coming of Age NYC. Spearheaded by Presbyterian Senior Services (PSS), the initiative currently consists eight of innovative, respected and diverse nonprofit agencies partnering together, including:
With special funding from NYC Service and generous support from founding sponsor EmblemHealth, Coming of Age: NYC continues to offer workshops, trainings and special presentations to the public.
OBJECTIVES: (1.) Help people 50+ explore their future (2.) Help them connect and contribute, and (3.) Help nonprofits in NYC build capacity by capturing the energy and expertise of this population.
PROGRAMS AND PRODUCTS TO HELP PEOPLE 50+ EXPLORE THEIR FUTURE
1. EXPLORE YOUR FUTURE — a workshop series that helps people envision the next phase of life.
2. CAPTURE THE ENERGY — a two day workshop for nonprofit staff to learn how to do more with less by tapping into an underutilized but powerful resource: the passions, talents and skills of people age 50+
3. INSPIRING OPPORTUNITIES — an informative, entertaining e-newsletter about civic engagement, work, wellness, and other topics important to people 50+.
4. “THE AGE FOR CHANGE-- AN E-BOOK”— an anthology covering compelling topics for those 50+: reconciliation, loss, work, and more. The book is available to download or print from the website.
