Brown and Gold Club

Sponsored by Johnson County Community College Student Life & Leadership Development Division, Brown & Gold was created to offer special programs including continuing education classes, programs, lectures and cultural events to benefit its members, students and the community. Named for the school colors, Brown & Gold has become a 'golden' resource for activities and events, all free or at a reduced cost!

Anyone age 55 or over, with at least 6 months residency in Johnson County Kansas can become a member for a nominal fee of $10 per person annually. If you wish to do a 3 year membership, the cost is only $25.

Shepherd's Center Central, Adventures in Learning

What is Adventures in Learning?

A program of Shepherd’s Center Central, Adventures in Learning is a multi-faceted curriculum offering subjects of interest to older adults and others in the community who enjoy the learning experience.

Classes are held from 8:30 A.M. to noon for a total of 40 Fridays. Sessions are divided into ten-week terms with a two-week hiatus between terms. The learning experience continues each Friday at noon during the Noon Forum lunch periods that feature outstanding speakers, guest lecturers and noted entertainers.

Where is Adventures in Learning held?

An interfaith, multi-cultural, and community-based program, Adventures in Learning is currently meeting at the South Broadland Presbyterian Church, 7850 Holmes KCMO.

Who are the instructors in the Adventures in Learning series?

Instructors and guest lecturers are well known in the community for their specialized skills and talent s and have expressed a desire to share with others their knowledge and expertise. They do so as volunteers in the belief that learning is forever.

Is there a fee connected with attendance at Adventures in Learning and is transportation available?

There is a tuition fee of $15 per ten-week term for class participation. For those wishing to enjoy the Noon Forum’s catered lunch, there is an additional per week fee of $5. Participants also have the option of bringing a sack lunch to the afternoon program. And yes, a van is available within a limited geographic area for a small fee. Call 816.444.1121 for more details.

Do volunteers play a part in Adventures in Learning's?

Absolutely! Adventures in Learning was founded on the principle of volunteerism and thirty years later continues to be a volunteer-led program.

If volunteerism is a part of the Adventure's structure are there opportunities to participate?

Yes, opportunities exist throughout the program. Based on an individual’s interests, opportunities to teach, plan programs, coordinate special events, and assist with on-site logistical tasks are available.

In addition to Adventures in learning, what other programs are available through Shepherd’s Center Central that serve older members of the community?

In an effort to assist mid-life and older adults remain in their homes (should they so desire), Shepherd’s Center Central provides programs and services that support independent living and promote meaningful community involvement.

Adventures in Learning Schedule

8:30 - 10:00 a.m.

  • blood sugar screenings
  • blood pressure checks ◦other periodic screenings (cholesterol, hearing, eye pressure)

9:15 - 9:45 a.m.

  • chair exercises

9:00 - 9:50 a.m.

  • registration and fellowship
  • coffee and donuts
  • lunch tickets must be purchased before 10:00 a.m. ($4/person)
    • please contact Shepherd's Center office for lunch reservation by 10:00 a.m. on the Thursday immediately preceding Adventures in Learning.

10:00 - 10:50 a.m.

  • Travelogue (a presentation regarding a location worldwide)
  • Issues Forum (a speaker presentation regarding an important local issue)

11:00 - 11:50 a.m.

  • Travelogue
  • Health (a speaker presention regarding an important health issue for older adults)
  • History (a presentation regarding a historical event or time period)
  • Words of Inspiration by area pastors.

Noon

  • Lunch is $4 or you may bring your own

12:45 - 2:00 p.m.

  • Afternoon program includes speaker and entertainment

Shepherd's Center Northland, Adventures in Learning

Adventures in Learning Program is a stimulating program for any older adult who would like to continue learning and sharing life experiences with peers. It is a great place to build old friendships and develop new ones as well as keep the ol' grey matter engaged and sharp!

We have an exciting new change.... Breakfast! This Fall we will begin the day with a great morning meal which should insure that we will all enjoy the classes with a full tummy and a fueled brain!

Adventures in Learning meets from 8:30 am-11:30 at North Cross United Methodist Church 1321 NE Vivion Road Kansas City, MO 64118

The morning begins at 8:30am with breakfast for $4.00. At 9:30am can choose between at least two classes and Line Dancing. At 10:30am two or more additional classes are offered for participants to again choose between. Though most attendees at are in the 60+ age range-- attendance is open to all adults. If you have a topic you would like to learn more about or one that you would like to present; please call the SCN office at 816.452.4536.

CLASSES

The subjects that are offered are limitless.... History, Literature, Religion, Art, CurrentAffairs, Book Reviews, Health, Business, Travel, Finance, Gardening, Fitness, Animals, Hobbies, and Forums for Local Candidates and Elected Officials.... If you have an interest you would like to learn about or to share let us know! Teachers are recruited from local colleges, universities, area high schools, seminaries, local religious leaders, historians, hospitals, business leaders, and from the rank of the students themselves who have an expertise or interest ot share.

CLASS FEES

Registration is $2.00. With our registration fee we cover the expense of agendas, name tags, monthly rent to North Cross and speakers.

LUNCH FEES

Breakfast will be provided at the cost of $4.00 per meal. You must call the SCN office by Wednesday before Adventures in Learning to reserve a breakfast. (816.452.4536)

SPARK (Senior Peers Actively Renewing Knowledge)

SPARKS’s philosophy is to provide, at modest cost, learning and fun social experiences for participants. There are no prerequisites, tests or grades for classes. Instructors are usually members who have a strong interest in a particular topic and, are not paid.

SPARK is an Elderhostel Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) and a member of the Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN.)

SPARK partners with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC.) This allows SPARK to have an LLI in a collegiate environment supported by the intellectual and cultural resources of the university. There is an annual membership fee of $40.
