The purpose of Breaktime Club is to provide a safe; enriching respite program for older adults with some limitations so that their caregivers are able to decompress from their daily responsibilities, improve their sense of well-being and acquire informational resources to aid in their caregiving tasks.
The Breaktime Club was developed by Shepherd's Center of America and is currently hosted by metro Kansas City Shepherd's Centers and associated area congregations. The program provides caregiver respite one day a week. Each session, caregivers and their care recipients are greeted by an experienced program coordinator and well-trained volunteers or staff. The Breaktime Club program invites older care recipients to enjoy a program which engages the body, mind, and spirit. Caregivers are able to find comfort in the fact that their loved ones are enjoying a day of social interaction and stimulating activities in a safe, respectful and caring environment. Breaktime Club allows individual caregivers the opportunitiy to relax, reconnect with friends, or concentrate on other personal activities. Studies have shown that respite brekas help caregivers maintain their health, relieve stress on extended family and delay or even avoid the cost of placement in long-term care facilities.
Equipping the Caregiver program is sponsored by Shepherd's Center of America and partially funded by the Mid America Regional Council Department on Aging. There are no fees associated with this service. The Older Americans Act allows for services to be provided to any person aged 60 or above. The law prohibits any form of discrimination based on income to determine eligibility for this service or to deny this service.
