Business-Minded Volunteer to Promote KCPL Program

Seeking a passionate, creative individual to assist with marketing/promotion of business programs at the Main Branch of the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library. Examples of work include but aren't limited to the creation of blogs, flyers, newsletters, and press releases.

Open-communication is key here. I would like some face time, but am completely open to a virtual workplace. I prefer someone who is either seeking portfolio work, a creative outlet from their current job or a retired marketing person who wants to stay engaged in the community.

Background:

We host a business program in the Main Auditorium of the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library on the third Thursday of every month. Each program features an entrepreneur from the metro area who discusses their experiences in starting and sustaining a successful business. The purpose of the program is to provide a platform for dialog in the community and a resource for individuals to turn to when they need inspiration, encouragement and answers to their own entrepreneurial endeavors.

If you have the energy, enthusiasm and capacity to help make this happen, please contact Christopher Barnickel by email at cbarnickel@kckpl.org

Boomers Get Their Groove Back

200_boomer_groove_print_3.BMP

How they’re finding new careers, becoming activists and making a difference in their communities.

Bill Kalahurka: 60, Kansas City, MO (picture by Parker Eshelman/Aurora Select)

Occupation: Voice-over actor and fundraising consultant.

Groove: He started with Meals on Wheels and soon began reading books to nursing home residents; he also reads newspapers aloud for recordings for the blind.

Advice: “Go out and make every day another opportunity to help those around you. Your rewards will be greater than the effort.”

On Tuesdays, Bill Kalahurka of Kansas City, Mo., delivers Meals on Wheels. Wednesday mornings, he reads books to nursing home residents. Thursdays, he reads newspapers aloud for recordings for the blind.

But if you ask Kalahurka, 60, why he volunteers three days a week, he doesn't go gooey about saving the world.

"I'm selfish," he says, "and I get something out of it." He enjoys socializing on his Meals on Wheels route. Reading aloud gives him practice for his part-time, paid work as a voice-over actor. And he just likes hearing "attaboys" from grateful neighbors.

Statement by Patrick A. Corvington

cncs.jpg

For Immediate Release:  January 19, 2011

Patrick A. Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, made the following statement on the passing of Sargent Shriver:
All of us in the world of national service and volunteering lost a guiding light with the passing of Robert Sargent "Sarge" Shriver.
Sarge was a tireless and determined builder of ways that people can improve the lives of their fellow citizens.  He leaves a powerful legacy of innovative programs including Peace Corps, VISTA, Foster Grandparents, Head Start, Legal Services, Job Corps, and more.  His initiatives during the 1960s helped shape an era and dared millions of young Americans to live out their ideals.
The national service programs of which we are stewards today directly evolved from Shriver’s vision and are continuing his legacy by engaging millions of Americans on their own path of service every year.  We endeavor to maintain Sarge's spirit and dedication in our work, and are proud and grateful to have that opportunity.

LOVE THAT WAR: Actors Theatre teams with UMKC, World War I Museum for classic British musical

7:30 pm at

National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial

100 West 26th Street, Kansas City, MO 64108

Sometimes the best way to deal with the horrors of war is to break into song. Yes war is ghastly, but it is also rife with absurdities that often cry out for satire, and for the lighter touch that a song can bring. Oh, What a Lovely War! – whose very title cues us into its sardonic tone – was one of the first documentary-style musicals, and it has remained fresh because of its skillful combination of history, black comedy, tragedy and a deeply human element. “If you tell a story of great importance through music and through comedy it doesn’t mean that you value it less,” says University of Missouri-Kansas City Professor of Theatre Arts Barry Kyle, who directs the upcoming local production of the British World War I classic.

“The theater doesn’t tell its best stories only through tragedy: Shakespeare is a very good example of that.” (Barry should know: He’s one of the world’s most prominent and sought-after Shakespearean directors.) The production is a collaboration of the Kansas City Actors Theater with the UMKC Theatre Department and the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial, and it features prominent actors John Rensenhouse and Phil Fiorini along with a number of UMKC graduate students – among them Kat Endsley, who is in her third year pursuing an M.F.A. in acting. It will be performed at the Museum’s J.C. Nichols Auditorium from February the 11th through the 27th.

To read full article, click here.

For tickets to “Oh, What a Lovely War!” go to www.kcactors.org or call 816-235-6222. Previews run from February the 11th through the 16th, and the regular run from February the 17th through the 27th.

Medicare Counseling

Medicare_logo_web.jpg

As the Boomers start turning 65 the number of individuals seeking Medicare counseling is increasing. This is evident here at Shepherd’s Center Central where the number of individuals served through our Medicare Counseling program doubled to 700 this last year. Our Medicare Program serves a wide variety of individuals of different ages, races and income levels. A third of the individuals served are under the age of 65 and receiving Medicare due to a disability and 20% are caregivers who are assisting a loved one who receives Medicare.

Anyone with questions regarding Medicare and insurance can use this service at no charge. The most common questions asked of our staff and trained volunteers are about Medicare, prescription drug coverage and medical insurance. Our staff and volunteers take the time to listen and provide you with current and accurate information. This may require several phone calls or office visits. So, no matter your age, race or income, Medicare Counseling is available through Shepherd’s Center Central. Let us help answer your questions and ease your stress.

For more information, contact David Hooper at (816) 444-1121 ext. 104 or dhooper@sccentral.org. Continue Reading

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MLK JR.bmp

To honor Dr. King on January 17, The Johnson County Library System and Shepherd’s Center Central’s Coming of Age/RSVP Johnson County initiative have come together.   Informing and educating ourselves, our children and grandchildren is vital to understanding the legacy and passion of this brave man who ultimately lost his life in the struggle.   In so doing, we believe that we might also be re-inspired to give more of our time and talents to our friends, neighbors and communities.  We are inviting everyone in Johnson County and beyond to join us!

Please see the following list of outstanding books and DVD’s for all ages (click continue reading).  Parents and grandparents will enjoy the selected works and those who lived through these turbulent times will personally remember much of what they read and see.  In addition, sharing the books and DVD’s created for younger children can be a perfect opportunity to also add one’s personal memories and perspective to the events of that era.  Long before the printed word, the oral history was the primary way these priceless stories were passed from one generation to another.

Won't you join us in taking the opportunity to “Borrow a Book or DVD” to help increase knowledge, understanding and awareness of this pivotal time in our history?  Sharing one’s own perspective from one’s own life’s experience will make the learning all the more exciting.  How about a special book group?  How about preparing to truly enjoy the experiences which will be available during Black History Month in February? (see "quilters" link)

Click here www.jocolibrary.org/findagoodbook for details about how to reserve and borrow these special works AND www.comingofage.org/kansascity to learn more about the opportunities through the Johnson County Libraries and Coming of Age/RSVP Johnson County.

A New Year: Tips for Caregivers

web logo.jpg
Congratulations:  you survived the hustle and bustle of the holiday season!  Are you already looking for ways to make 2011 your best year yet?  Let the KC Caregiver Supportline and Shepherd's Center Central give you a hand.  Give us one call with your questions about taking care of an older adult relative or friend, and we'll provide you with many answers!  Whether you're looking for help around the house, assistance with paying for prescription drugs, transportation to important appointments or simply a friendly, listening ear, we're here for you.

As you make your plans for the next 12 months, keep these important tasks in mind:

  • Everything in its place:  Designate a safe and secure location for your and your loved one's medications, health history and any other crucial personal information.
  • When was that again? Note can't-miss dates like doctor's appointments, get-togethers with friends, and deadlines on a calendar you can easily access.
  • Self-care:  Be the best caregiver possible by specifically scheduling some just-for-you time. Take a nap, see a movie, read a bestseller. Whatever you do, make sure to nurture your needs and watch out for your well-being.
  • Use your resources:  Not only can you rely on the KC Caregiver Supportline for help, take advantage of kind family and friends who tell you to call when you need something. Accept their offers to pitch in and you'll both feel really good!
We're just a phone call or e-mail away! Connect with us at (816) 444-1122 or kloeb@sccentral.org. Happy New Year! Continue Reading

Csonka among generation's sports icons feeling their age

larry_csonka_sidelines_photofile.jpg

Larry Csonka tells a story about a reunion of his 1972 Miami Dolphins some years back. They spent hours trading stories about their aches and pains and hobbled knees. Then they boarded a bus bound for a night game to be trotted out for halftime huzzahs.

Csonka enjoyed the illusion of time travel as he rode in that darkened carriage. "The same guys who had always jawed at each other were jawing at each other," he says. "The voices hadn't changed. And for an instant it was like we stepped back to 1972 all over again.

Coming of Age: Kansas City
Inspiring Opportunities

November 2010

"The baby boomers and their children, the millennial generation, are looking for places to live and work that reflect their current desires and life needs. Boomers are downsizing as their children leave home while the millennials, or generation Y, are setting out on their careers with far different housing needs and preferences. Both of these huge demographic groups want something that the U.S. housing market is not currently providing: small one- to three-bedroom homes in walkable, transit-oriented, economically dynamic, and job-rich neighborhoods." -New American Foundation, Washington Monthly

Carrots, Not Sticks, for Longer Working Lives

“There’s no need to force people to work longer by raising Social Security’s retirement age,” writes Civic Ventures’ policy expert David Bank in The Hill, a must-read for Washington insiders. Instead, Bank tells President Obama’s debt commission, “Making it easier and more appealing for more people to keep working could help balance the system’s books while minimizing any benefit cuts.”

Fun Ways to Give Back

Restoring the Past

The mission of the Heritage Conservation Network is to protect architectural heritage globally. Founded in 2002, the non-profit organization receives requests from all over the world and has pre-determined criteria to figure out which projects to tackle.

“Our workshops last one to two weeks at a site,” said Judith Broeker, co-founder and program director at the conservation organization. “It’s our goal to inspire locals to pick up where we leave off to complete the job.”

The group currently organizes seven workshops a year. Each of those typically has six to seven volunteer participants ranging from 16 to 80 years old.

“Amazing amounts of work get done for that small of a number,” Broeker said. “Everyone does what they can do.

“Each site we visit is amazing and has a really valuable building for the people or the country,” she added. “It’s a great area to work in—everyone wants to be there.”

Heritage Conservation Network currently has U.S. opportunities scheduled for 2010.

International opportunities include conserving a Swahili-style stone house in Kenya and preserving tower houses in Albania.

“In this day and age of being green, preservation is as green as you can get,” Broeker said. “We’re seeing what’s there and preserving it.”

healthscreening.jpg

Key tests the experts recommend, along with some caveats

As we push into our 50s and beyond, routine screenings to detect health problems become more and more important. Often, the earlier a problem is detected and diagnosed, the earlier it can be successfully treated or managed. Screenings are a critical part of protecting our health. But which tests do we really need, and when? And how do we weigh their benefits against any risks?

Coming of Age: Kansas City
Inspiring Opportunities

October 2010

An enthusiastic crowd of special guests and community leaders attended the Coming of Age/RSVP Johnson County launch event hosted by Shepherd’s Center Central on September 22, 2010. The event was held in the atrium of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art of Johnson County Community College where those attending learned more about this innovative approach to volunteer recruitment and retention.

Coming of Age/RSVP Johnson County Coordinator, Liz Zamora, will concentrate on strengthening partnerships and retaining and expanding the base of existing RSVP volunteers who have donated thousands of hours of service throughout the county.

Sandra Aust, Director, Coming of Age: Kansas City, hopes this new initiative will bridge the gap between those looking to give back and meaningful volunteer opportunities that will make a real impact in the community.

”Johnson County is a community of very generous people. They give freely of their time and talent. Coming of Age/RSVP can help take volunteering to a whole new level and Shepherd’s Center Central is delighted to be a part of it all,” said Aust.

For more information about how to get involved in Johnson County, visit www.comingofage.org/kansascity or contact Liz Zamora at: lzamora@sccentral.org or 816-444-1121 ext. 103.

James Smallwood: Keeping a Promise

James Smallwood, 62, started The Choice Is Yours by accident.

Almost 20 years ago, he ran across a group of single mothers in Camden, N.J., who were duped into buying dilapidated houses.

"They found themselves prostituting themselves to contractors to get things fixed," Smallwood says. "I didn't want to see ladies selling themselves just so they could get a faucet repaired."

Smallwood, a carpenter by trade, used a $5,000 grant to teach these women basic plumbing and carpentry skills so they could maintain their own homes.
