Welcome to Coming of Age: Kansas City

Coming of Age: Kansas City is a metro-wide initiative, led by Shepherd's Center Central, which promotes civic involvement, lifelong learning, and community leadership in the 50+ population.

Through the Coming of Age: Kansas City initiative, those 50+ will discover inspiring opportunities to explore passions and engage in meaningful service throughout the Kansas City community.

Coming of Age: Kansas City will transform the talents, experience, and wisdom of those 50+ to enrich the community and contribute to its greater good, by:

  • Empowering those 50+ as they plan for the future
  • Promoting paid and unpaid work, lifelong learning, and community leadership among the 50+
  • Working with nonprofits to recruit, train, and retain 50+ volunteers

With the support of our community partners, Shepherd's Center Central is proud to introduce this initiative to the Kansas City area.

Coming of Age: Kansas City welcomes the newest member to our team...
Liz Zamora, Coming of Age/RSVP Johnson County Coordinator
Liz Zamora

Liz Zamora is a seasoned professional who has a diverse background in community service and television journalism. She began her career as a photojournalist in Springfield, Missouri and moved to Kansas City to continue her career as a journalist.

Zamora began her work in the community while working at the Kansas City Police Department and the City of Kansas City. She coordinated special events, working with the public and focused her journalism skills doing stories about Kansas City neighborhoods.

While in Topeka, Zamora served as the six o’clock anchor and community reporter for KTKA. She won two regional Kansas Broadcasting Awards for her investigative pieces on the impact of abandoned properties and drug houses on the local community. Her work with neighborhoods became more involved as she became the station’s community liaison and started working closely with neighborhood groups. She hosted quarterly forums to help these leaders address community issues like code enforcement and crime. Now she’s back in Johnson County and ready to head up the Coming of Age Initiative.

Zamora graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. In her spare time, Zamora likes to play golf and tennis and cheer her Tigers on to victory in basketball and football.
