What's Your Purpose? The winners of this year's Purpose Prize have been announced. The prize is awarded to Americans over 60 who are leading a new age of social innovation. On the site, you can read 15 inspiring stories about some remarkable people who are truly making a difference. Pictured to the right is Gloria Jackson Bacon, one of the winners. At age 67, she founded Project 18, in order to build healthy families and communities that will help children thrive emotionally, socially, physically and academically. No Vacation Nation Yes, that would be us. The USA has been dubbed the "no vacation nation" in a new report from the European Trade Union Institute that compares leave and vacation time among 21 countries. It turns out that we are the only economically advanced nation where workers are not legislatively guaranteed vacation time. The report found that in practice Americans take half as much time off as Europeans. Life After Work CNN ran a recent series on rethinking retirement, including one story on how Boomers are choosing work and another on the emotional toll of retirement. There's also a short video about Melvin Washington, who took his corporate career and volunteer experience and made the leap to being fulltime in the nonprofit world. Retirement Guilt? In this thought provoking article, Thomas Cangelosi, 54, who recently retired after 30 years of teaching, shares how telling people you are retired nowadays is "whispered with a mixture of shame and guilt. Colleagues, family, and friends often respond with puzzled congratulations followed by an interrogation usually reserved for high school dropouts: 'Have you found another job? Are you beginning a new career? What will you do with yourself?'"Global Volunteerism In her monthly hot topic, local volunteer management guru and globetrotter Susan Ellis has some interesting observations about volunteering and cultural differences around the world."Think Golden Girls meets Kate & Allie" Coming of Age founding partner AARP reports on the latest hot trend for older women. "Whether widowed, divorced, or single, more and more women are finding a surprisingly practical living arrangement: house sharing."Rainbow Flight and the Billie Jean King Pool The Inquirer's Debbie Woodell doesn't think the growing number of retirement communities for lesbians and gays is something to celebrate: "Rainbow flight will erase the heart and soul of where we came from.... Putting us in our place — literally — marginalizes us. What happens to the gay civil-rights movement when so many of the pioneers are patted on the head, told to take a dip in the Billie Jean King pool and take some music lessons in the Leonard Bernstein lounge?"
