Fighting Poverty with Passion AARP-Maine needs your help! The University of Maine Center on Aging places up to 30 VISTA members with organizations, located across the state, focused on improving the lives of seniors. The project focuses on the areas of: access to affordable health care; job retraining for older workers; financial planning and literacy; and fraud prevention. AARP is a non-profit organization for people over 50 with a mission to enhance to quality of life for all as we age. AARP leads positive social change and delivers value to members through information, advocacy and service. Some examples include promoting prescription drug affordability, elder abuse and financial fraud prevention, patient protection, and older worker initiatives. VISTA members engage in a variety of projects defined by the specific needs of the local organizational partners. The types of activities include: designing, implementing and evaluating pilot programs; managing and recruiting volunteers; leading community outreach initiatives; writing grants; conducting fund raisers; conducting public relations campaigns; and facilitating collaboration between community organizations. The AARP-Maine project entails project management duties for a financial security/SEC program on investment fraud, and a forum for business regarding employing the older worker. VISTA will help organize AARP University in Bangor, covering issues related to long term care, and help plan messages for radio program targeting rural Maine.
