Even those with close, loving relationships report having time for personal growth and renewal after grieving their loss. This MSNBC article includes steps on how to begin the process of transformation after the death of a parent.
Not only is it fun to participate in theater, write poetry, paint, make jewelry, or sing, research is finding that being involved in creative pursuits is also good for your health. A study cited in this Washington Post article compares two groups of folks 60+ --one active in arts activities and one not -- and found that those in the arts group had better overall physical health, better scores on depression and loneliness scales, increased independence, and a heightened sense of control and social engagement, both of which may boost the immune system. Sounds like it's time to get busy expressing your creative self.
Many of today's older Americans are adamant in their desire to avoid nursing homes or assisted living. In fact, a 2006 AARP study found that 90% of adults 60 and older say they want to stay in their home or community rather than be uprooted late in life. As reported in the Los Angeles Times, there is a movement to back them up called "aging in place." The formation of community associations makes this possible. Learn more about this new option...

You can find more opportunities at:![]() AFC Mentoring, a Boston-based program that empowers foster and adopted youth to flourish through committed mentoring relationships, is seeking a VISTA/Americorps worker who will focus on increasing and diversifying the organization's fund-raising capacity. AFC Mentors provide one-to-one mentoring, matching adult volunteer mentors with youth in care who are between the ages of 7 and 17. The youth being served are among the highest risk identifiable group for future poverty, but also have great potential.

This person will work with many civic, community, and professional groups to make them aware of Coming of Age and involve their membership in compelling paid and unpaid opportunities to connect and contribute to the community. A special focus is reaching out to individuals and organizations in diverse communities, including developing and managing a public awareness campaign.

You are needed to represent the American Diabetes Association (ADA) at health fairs in Philadelphia and surrounding areas. At each health fair you attend, you will be making a difference by providing diabetes education to those that need it most and spreading the word about events and programs aimed at preventing and curing the disease.
