Inspiring Opportunities is an email from Coming of Age for people 50+ who are making a difference in the world, in their communities and in their lives. Inside:
What's New Have We Got an Opportunity for You! Make-A-Difference Calendar Past Issues What's New
Is 50+ the Age of Creativity? We think so. Which is why we're launching our year-long Boomervision! lecture/community dialogue series next month with an incredible tale of re-invention and an evening about how to enrich your life -- and your community-- by becoming more creative. Learn More. Fighting Violence
The Inquirer recently reported that so far 1,000 men have signed up for "Call to Action: 10,000 Men: It's A New Day in Philadelphia" The objective of the program is to "organize 10,000 MEN to act in a proactive manner by going into designated communities and deterring unwanted and illegal behavior." October 21 is the kickoff for the event. You can learn more by visiting the Philadelphia Millions More Movement web site. Philadelphia, Bono and Africa
Rock star and Humanitarian star Bono accepted the Liberty Medal at the Constitution Center last Thursday. Will Bunch of the Daily News blogged Bono's acceptance speech, emphasizing Bono's criticism of our current administration's torture and detention policies. "You do not have to become a monster to defeat a monster," said Bono. Carolyn Davis of the Inquirer argued that the popularity of social movements, like those to end genocide in Darfur are due in large part to the work of celebrities like Bono. And in case you thought otherwise, the LOVE park fountain's water turning red last Thursday was not to honor Bono's "Red" campaign against poverty but a publicity stunt for "Dexter," a series about a serial killer. The red was supposed to be blood. Just what Philly needs! In more inspiring news, to coincide with Bono's visit, the Daily News spotlighted local heroes working on behalf of Africa. Did you know Ali B. Dinar, the grandson of the last king of Darfur, is a professor at Penn, and president of Philadelphia's Darfur Alert Coalition? Read about him here and other locals fighting for Africa here. Grandparents as Caregivers
Did you know that "in Philadelphia alone, one in six children, more than 60,000, are being raised by a relative, often a grandparent?" Read this opinion piece in the Daily News to learn about the challenges grandparents in this situation face and what you can do to help. A Green Google for the Environment
Those looking to help the environment can now use Blackle, an environmentally friendly Google. The black background uses less energy than the white one. Read more about it here.
