Phyllis,
Possibly in past generations 53 would have been considered old. Today, in most instances, a person age 53 is no longer thought to be old. Admittedly, Im not sure at what age a person is considered to be old. In my opinion age is a relative term. More importantly, when prospective employers have a particular position to fill they are usually looking for the best qualified. (I use the word usually as it would be accurate to state that there are times when discrimination is prevalent in the workplace and it has several ugly manifestations including ethnicity, race, religion, sex, and age.)
As you evaluate the merits of seeking out new opportunities ask yourself questions like: What are my strengths? What is it I like doing? What is it I want to do more of? Next, as you consider new opportunities, imagine you were interviewing people for the position you are seeking, what would be the particular skills needed? What questions would you ask the applicant? How would you assess the skills of the prospective employee? Remember to match your skills to the position.
In addition to the functional skills needed to be successful, employers are seeking employees who embrace a healthy attitude toward change and lifelong learning. I read somewhere that people are hired for skills and fired for attitude. In all that we do we need to do it to the best of our abilities, and in such a fashion that we are adding value to our work.
There are numerous ways to seek out new opportunities including reading the newspaper daily, listening to the radio, and watching television. As we do these things we should be taking in information and looking for new opportunities as to where our skills are needed.
Yes, read the Help Wanted ads. Send out your resume to positions where you believe there is a potential for a good match. Take advantage of attending job fair activities, making sure to circulate and talk to prospective employers. Identify potential employers and consider sending a target letter stating your interest in talking with them. Attend professional organizations and in addition to being active become a member and volunteer to help out! Is this day and age the Internet continues to be an integral part of career search activities and is a must. Finally, networking continues to be the major source of new job opportunities especially for professionals.
Thanks for asking and good luck!
