Health Care Jobs Available

Did you know that over half – 57 percent – of the more than 10 million nonprofit jobs in the U.S. are in health care? And that health care will generate millions of new wage and salary jobs between 2008 and 2018, more than any other industry? If that situation gets you thinking about your encore in a big-picture sense, a new, free website can help you drill down to the details. The Virtual Career Network can help you explore 80 different health care careers. You can even take online classes (some free) and search for health care jobs by zip code.

Elder Courts: A Growing Trend

About one in seven older Americans living outside institutions have experienced physical, psychological or financial abuse, according to a 2011 government study. This chilling statistic, which is probably lower than the actual number, has led to the creation of the first "elder court", located in Contra Costa County, California. Among the services offered is a volunteer senior peer counselor who supports older adults through the process. The idea is spreading to other areas of the country as the number of restraining orders against children and other family members increases.

How Does the Supreme Court Decision Affect Elders?

This article in Forbes simplifies the effects on older adults of a "no" vote on the Affordable Care bill from the Supreme Court. Among the areas in jeopardy are Medicaid's health care program, which is now covered through state/federal programs and slated to expand to millions of currently uninsured working people; new long-term services for older adults seeking services at home or in the community; assistance for those receiving Medicare's Part D drug benefit (filling the donut hole); and improvements in how care is delivered to those suffering from chronic diseases. Thanks Steve!

While Apple's iPads have been all the rage for the younger set, a Florida nursing facility is using this technology to jump-start residents' memories, mobility, and social skills that have diminished through age and various forms of dementia. Steve Jobs' creation provides a way for people of all ages to communicate throughout their lifetimes -- quite a legacy! While there are devices that monitor an older person's movements and remind them to take a pill, the iPad is the first that directly interacts with them. Residents can run their hands across the tablet's smooth surface to play games, read, and communicate with others. Click here for more.

Talk About Inspiring!

This YouTube video makes you want to put your sneakers on, grab a few weights, and work as hard as you can to look like Ernestine Shepherd, the teacher. This extraordinarily fit 72-year-old with a shelf of trophies for bragging rights, runs 80 miles a week and teaches classes at the United Methodist Church in Baltimore for older women who try to follow her every step. Her can-do spirit, warmth, and encouragement make her students feel that they, too, can look and feel their best.

Discounts...A Good Reason to Admit Your Age!

While some hesitate to divulge their age, this article makes it clear that being older has its perks. With baby boomers not showing any signs of slowing down, those turning 62 (you don't have to wait until you are 65!) will be glad to know that this milestone comes with significant discounts. So fess up...and enjoy the deals. Click here to learn more...

Older Entrepreneurs Outpace Youngsters

Entrepreneurs whose businesses can jump start the economy have become the darlings of foundations, MBA programs, and the government. Savvy and smart kids are being encouraged to work for themselves, but new research indicates that older entrepreneurs are really the group to be pursued to create successful start-ups. Contrary to conventional wisdom, entrepreneurship is increasingly a priority of older workers—even in the youth-obsessed technology sector. To learn the reasons for the elders' success, click here.
