Healthier Living Workshop Leader
Become a certified Healthier Living Leader and help promote healthy aging! The Healthier Living program uses an evidence-based curriculum developed by Stanford University to empower people with chronic conditions to self manage their care. Over 10 different San Francisco organizations are collaborating to provide Healthier Living workshops in various locations for older adults dealing with chronic conditions. Opportunities are available to train leaders who speak one or more of the following languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Korean, and Russian. Leaders with chronic conditions preferred.
A 4-day(32hr) Leader training is required to be certified to lead workshops. Training tuition is covered by sponsoring agency. Leaders must be available to conduct a 6-week workshop, with classes scheduled once a week at 2.5hrs per class soon after receiving the training (certification is only valid if leaders conduct at least one 6-week workshop per year). Leaders receive stipends of $180 per 6-week workshop series. To learn more details about Leader Trainings & workshops in San Francisco contact Ken Wong by sending an email below. During a 6-week Healthier Living Workshop, two leaders are required to facilitate, plan, and coordinate the curriculum created by Stanford University. Activities that leaders will co-facilitate for a group of 10-15 older adults with chronic conditions include: modeling healthier living techniques, assisting with goal setting, problem solving, better communication, physical activity, health eating, dealing with emotional issues, deep breathing, and muscle relaxation. As a result the participants learn to better manage their chronic conditions leading to a higher quality of living.
Leaders are lay or professional people, preferably with a chronic condition who:
- Are able to listen and facilitate a group discussion while following a curriculum researched and designed by Stanford University. No additional lesson plans are required.
- Complete a 4-day Leader Training and conduct a 6-week workshop to be certified.
- Desire to have fun, meet new people and have appreciation for diverse individuals and new ideas.
- Are able to learn new skills, problem solve, model healthy living techniques and maintain confidentiality.
A new volunteer will be matched with an experienced Lay Leader or Master Trainer at one of the 10 Healthier Living coalition partner agencies. The staff person at the agency will provide orientation for the leader(s) related to workshop planning, outreach and recruiting, set-up, and materials needed for the workshop. During the 6-week session, the new leader/volunteer will also be observed and provided with technical assistance/feedback as needed to assist with development of his/her skills in facilitating the workshops.
